SUSE Appliance Toolkit from Novell Makes it Easy to Build and Deliver Applications to the Cloud

SUSE Appliance Toolkit 1.1 adds support for Amazon EC2, KVM and OVF virtualization formats, and new data center capabilities.

Waltham, MA, September 30, 2010 -- Novell today announced significant advances to its SUSE® Appliance Toolkit, which features the award-winning solution SUSE Studio™

and a comprehensive suite of tools designed to make Linux-powered applications portable and cloud-enabled. This latest version of the toolkit supports the creation of Amazon EC2 images, new virtualization formats and advanced data center capabilities. As a result, independent software vendors (ISVs) and enterprises can build optimized application images in minutes rather than days for deployment in private and public clouds.

SUSE® Appliance Toolkit, a WorkloadIQ™ product, is a comprehensive collection of tools that help independent software vendors (ISVs) and enterprise IT departments reduce the complexity of software deployment, maintenance and support costs across physical, virtual and cloud environments. ISVs and enterprises can accelerate the delivery of applications to the cloud through SUSE Appliance Toolkit's guided appliance building and integrated “test-drive” feature that enables rapid testing and iteration.

“As the industry’s first open source video stack, our customers use our technology to enhance their websites with video and interactive rich-media functionalities,” said Ron Yekutiel, chairman and CEO at Kaltura. “With SUSE Studio and the SUSE Appliance Toolkit, we can quickly expand our value-added service offerings with the creation of virtual appliances, providing our customers with customized versions of our integrated video capabilities that can be quickly installed in their physical, virtual and cloud computing infrastructures.”

New to SUSE Appliance Toolkit 1.1
Novell has enhanced the many tools available in SUSE Appliance Toolkit – SUSE Studio Onsite, WebYaST, SUSE Lifecycle Management Server and support for KIWI -- by adding features including:

* Build Amazon EC2 images -- announced in August 2010 as part of the SUSE Cloud Program, Amazon Web Services will soon offer on-demand instances of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server with hourly pricing; now ISVs and enterprises alike can build SUSE Linux Enterprise-based application images for Amazon EC2 using SUSE Appliance Toolkit.

* Support for KVM and OVF virtual machine formats -- expands the breadth of virtual environments for which ISVs and enterprises can quickly package their applications, enabling greater flexibility and, with OVF, greater portability.

* Support for SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP1 -- delivers the industry’s broadest virtualization capabilities, powerful advances in performance, reliability and security, and more flexible maintenance and support options, thus enabling enterprises to reduce cost and risk whether they are consuming ISV appliances or building their own cloud-enabled application images.

* Advanced capabilities for enterprises -- expands the scope of supported applications and use cases. New enhancements including network booting via PXE, reassembly of larger physical disks into logical disks using LVM, and importing of existing KIWI and AutoYaST scripts. ISVs can also use these features to meet the needs of their large data center customers.

Cloud computing offers the promise of agility and speed to market, but organizations often lack the tools to quickly and efficiently deploy their applications to cloud environments,” said Markus Rex, senior vice president and general manager of Open Platform Solutions at Novell. “The software appliance form factor – a pre-configured combination of operating system, middleware and application – provides the ideal bridge to the cloud. With SUSE Appliance Toolkit, enterprises and technology providers can create, test and enhance applications for cloud infrastructures, all in a few minutes.”

About the SUSE Appliance Toolkit
SUSE Appliance Toolkit is part of the SUSE Appliance Program, a comprehensive business and technology program that helps ISVs simplify appliance creation, reduce development and support costs, and extend applications to the cloud. A key component of SUSE Appliance Toolkit is SUSE Studio, the industry’s most successful web-based appliance creation tool with more than 85,000 registered users worldwide.

SUSE Linux Enterprise JeOS (Just enough Operating System), a minimal configuration of SUSE Linux Enterprise included with SUSE Appliance Toolkit, offers a highly compact starting point for building optimized application images, thus minimizing resource requirements and maximizing security. SUSE Studio, a component of SUSE Appliance Toolkit, allows users to build application images for physical, virtual and cloud environments, all in a matter of minutes.

Leading ISVs and technology providers have shown widespread support for the SUSE Appliance Program, including Adaris Technologies, Black Diamond Software, Codice Software, Commvault, Extis GMBH, GroundWork Open Source, HP, IBM, Infobright, Ingres, Kaltura, Lymeware, Messaging Architects, Mindtouch, PurposefulClouds, REDE, ROC Software, SAP AG, SEP, Sonoa Systems, VMware and Zmanda.

Wavelink Releases Web-based Version of Remote Control Helpdesk Software for Mobile Devices

Wavelink Remote Control 4.0 for Avalanche allows helpdesk staff to remotely troubleshoot and remedy mobile devices from a web browser.

MIDVALE, UT, September 30, 2010 -- Wavelink Corporation (www.wavelink.com) today announced a new release of its Avalanche Remote Control™ product. Wavelink Remote Control 4.0 for Avalanche features a new web-based interface with the ability to remotely connect to any device over the WLAN or WWAN from any standard web browser to troubleshoot and remedy device and application problems and provide end-user support and training.

Remote Control 4.0 seamlessly integrates with Wavelink Avalanche, the industry’s leading software for mobile device management and wireless infrastructure management. With Wavelink Remote Control, administrators and helpdesk staff can remotely take total control of a mobile device to diagnose and fix both application and device problems. The product delivers the ability to start and stop processes, compare and edit registry settings in real time and update software files and applications. Administrators can remotely train end users to use the device and applications and any new features as they become available. This reduces training time, drastically reduces mobile device down-time and increases end-user productivity.

“As with Avalanche 5, this version of Remote Control takes the most feature-rich application on the market and delivers it through an intuitive web interface,” said Peter Cannon, senior product manager for Wavelink. “Allowing an administrator to simply use a web browser to see what the user sees and make changes directly to the device takes the guesswork out of resolving problems, saving considerable time and money.”

With this release of Wavelink Remote Control, an administrator can respond to a help desk request using their smartphone, such as an iPhone*, Android* or Windows Mobile* device. For example, a text or e-mail alert could be sent to a remote administrator who uses their smartphone to connect directly to the mobile device that needs attention. At this point, the administrator can perform tasks such as viewing and verifying a registry and starting or stopping a process.

Wavelink Remote Control works inside and outside the four walls, over wireless wide area networks and local area networks. It supports both Windows* and Linux* environments and is now available through Wavelink and its partners. For more information please visit http://www.wavelink.com/products/avrc.aspx.

The C5 sports 2.2inch QVGA display, which has the resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and supports 16 million colors. The image quality is average and sun legibility is very poor. We don’t have any gripes with it, taking price as consideration.

The qwerty keyboard could have been still great. The navigation array include 5 way Navigational toggle, two soft keys, a Call, end, clear and application keys.

Microsoft Helps Demi and Ashton (DNA) Foundation Fight Online Child Exploitation

High-profile couple Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher today announced they have enlisted Microsoft and other large technology companies to join a task force to find innovative new ways to combat child exploitation on the Internet.

Redmond, WA, September 27, 2010 -- The Demi and Ashton (DNA) Foundation today announced they have enlisted Microsoft to help combat child sex trafficking online, the actors announced Thursday at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York City.

Pamela Passman (speaking), Microsoft corporate vice president and deputy general counsel, Global Corporate Affairs, joins Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore on stage at the Clinton Global Initiative event in New York City to discuss how technologies such as PhotoDNA can help fight child trafficking. High-profile celebrity couple Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher at a press conference asked technology companies, including Microsoft, to form a task force to find creative solutions for addressing online child exploitation.

Samantha Doerr, communications manager for Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, said the company is looking forward to working with the task force. “Given our history in combating child exploitation with PhotoDNA, Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS), National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and more, we view this partnership as another valuable opportunity to help raise awareness of this issue,” she said.
Late last year, Microsoft donated its PhotoDNA technology to NCMEC to help find and remove some of the worst known images of child sexual exploitation from the Internet. The technology was created by Microsoft Research, and helps calculate the distinct characteristics of a digital image to match it to other copies of that same image.

Microsoft, Canadian police, and international law enforcement officers also developed the Child Exploitation Tracking System (CETS), a unique software tool that helps law enforcement officials collaborate and share information with other police services. CETS was created to increase the effectiveness of investigators and teams by providing them with software to store, search, share and analyze large volumes of evidence and match cases across police agencies.

Doerr said Moore and Kutcher’s DNA Foundation task force is likely to call upon these Microsoft technologies as it grows into its goal of reducing child exploitation.

The task force has had several initial meetings already, including one meeting hosted by Microsoft at its Silicon Valley office, Doerr said. The invite list included a substantial group of top tech companies, “almost all of whom are competing against each other in various forums.” Given that, and the number of participants, Doerr said she wasn’t sure what success the task force would see.

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised at this experience, and the savvy, participation, and smart, engaged questions from Demi and Ashton,” Doerr said. “This is something they’re really serious about.”

At the Clinton Global Initiative meeting, Moore and Kutcher also announced a new “Real Men” ad campaign in which male celebrities will bring attention to the issue of child trafficking and exploitation. For today’s announcements, Moore and Kutcher were joined on stage by Pamela Passman, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Global Corporate Affairs, and other key participants.

“Because of the nature of the problem, the victims themselves are often faceless. It hasn’t really been talked about widely because frankly, it makes people uncomfortable,” Doerr said. “For Microsoft, it was natural to want to talk about the work we’ve already been doing in related areas. It’s great to see them doing this, and having the opportunity to apply what Microsoft has learned in related efforts to stop complex child trafficking problems.”

Doerr said the task force is still in its early days, but the group will continue meeting and is committed to finding ways to confront the exploitation of children online.

The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) was founded in 2005 as a non-partisan initiative of the William J. Clinton Foundation. The CGI aims to address major global problems, ranging from education issues to the environment, by “moving beyond discussion” and fostering shared responsibility.
The CGI annual meeting in New York City attracts a wide cross-section of who’s who attendees, including presidents, former heads of state, CEOs, leaders of nonprofits, celebrities, academics and more.

CGI has involved Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as Microsoft. Microsoft is a sponsor of the event in addition to participating in forums that align with the company’s key community outreach areas including education and environmental sustainability.

Samantha Doerr, Communications Manager, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit
“For us, it was a natural fit to become not only a sponsor but an active participant in making commitments,” said Alison Thompson, marketing communications director for Microsoft Citizenship. “It’s been an incredible opportunity to collaborate with public, private and non-profit organizations on any number of societal issues and see how we can work together to solve them.”

Microsoft is a key stakeholder in Global Give Back Circle (GGBC), a program spotlighted at last year’s CGI meeting, Thompson said. The program helps disadvantaged girls in Kenya further their education and receive job skills so they can improve their lives and give back to their communities. Microsoft collaborated with GGBC to install computer labs in Kenya and to support IT skills training for the girls. Some of the women working for Microsoft West, East and Central Africa (WECA) also serve as mentors.

“They’re an amazing group of girls, and it’s very humbling to sit down and learn someone’s story, where they’ve come from, and how their drive and desire is leading them to do something great with their lives,” said Thompson, who met some of the girls in the program at last year’s meeting.
One of the students from the Global Give Back Circle is attending this year’s meeting, and participated in a panel discussion with Passman. After her experience with the Global Give Back Circle, she earned a full-ride scholarship to Carthage College in Wisconsin. She plans to study medicine and return to Kenya after school to help her community.

“I’m very proud, and very moved to see how our citizenship efforts and partnerships are really making a difference,” Thompson said.

International Space Station Expedition 24 Crew Lands Safely

Washington, USA, September 25, 2010 -- Expedition 24 Commander Alexander Skvortsov and Flight Engineers Tracy Caldwell Dyson and Mikhail Kornienko landed their Soyuz TMA-18 spacecraft in Kazakhstan on Saturday, Sept. 25, wrapping up a six-month stay aboard the International Space Station.

Skvortsov, the Soyuz commander, was at the controls of the spacecraft as it undocked at 10:02 p.m. EDT Friday from the Poisk module's docking port on the station's Zvezda module. The undocking and landing occurred a day later than planned because of a hatch sensor problem Thursday night. That problem prevented hooks on the Poisk side of the docking mechanism from opening. Station crew members installed a series of jumper cables, bypassing the sensor, and the Poisk module hooks retracted.

Following undocking and a normal descent, the crew landed at 1:23 a.m. near Arkalyk, Kazakhstan.

Russian recovery teams were on hand to help the crew exit the Soyuz vehicle and adjust to gravity after 176 days in space. Skvortsov and Kornienko will return Saturday to the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, outside of Moscow.

The trio launched aboard the Soyuz TMA-18 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan in April. As members of the Expedition 23 and 24 crews, they spent 174 days on the station. Caldwell Dyson and Expedition 25 Commander Doug Wheelock conducted three spacewalks to replace a faulty cooling pump module on the station's backbone, known as the truss. Kornienko conducted one spacewalk to prepare the recently delivered Russian Rassvet Module for future automated dockings by Russian spacecraft.

The station is occupied by Wheelock, who assumed command of the station Wednesday, NASA Flight Engineer Shannon Walker, and Russian Flight Engineer Fyodor Yurchikhin, who arrived in mid-June.

A new trio of Expedition 25 crew members - NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonauts Alexander Kaleri and Oleg Skripochka - will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome on Oct. 7 (Oct. 8 in Kazakhstan) and arrive on the station about 48 hours later.

Oracle offers many certifications starting from programmer level to architect level. Java Enterprise Edition 5 Enterprise Architect Certified Master certification is designed for enterprise architects responsible for building high scale enterprise applications or who wish to be prospective architects. The certification exam tests candidate’s architectural knowledge in and out.

A Software Architect is the technical boss of software systems and he should act like a software doctor to resolve the issues. A basic difference between a developer and an architect is the way they design the application. Developer may not think about the scalability, maintainability, performance, etc for long run. But architect always foresees the application’s future expectations about performance, scalability, etc.

What are the qualifications required to become a Java EE Architect?

I would say he/she should be a Oracle Certified Java EE Architect. Because it comprises of all the necessary qualification required for a Technical Architect required for Java EE assignment. I love the way the SCEA Part 2 and Part 3 designed.

The following are the interesting topics that Java Enterprise Edition 5 Enterprise Architect Certified Master Exam covers:

Java Enterprise Edition 5 Enterprise Architect Certified Master Exam Step 1

* Application Design Concepts and Principles – Tests your OO design language skills
* Common architectures – Tests the skills in evaluation of enterprise application tiers
* Integration and Messaging – Tests the architectural solution knowledge to connect Java EE with any legacy systems and architectural solution knowledge in synchronous and asynchronous message architecture
* Business Tier Technologies – Tests the design and basic API knowledge in EJB and JPA
* Web Tier Technologies – Tests the design and basic knowledge in WAF,JSP,Servlet,JSF and JSTL
* Applicability of Java EE – Tests the design decision knowledge about Java EE technologies
* Patterns – Tests the knowledge in design patterns
* Security – Tests various kinds of enterprise security including firewalls and DMZ

Java Enterprise Edition 5 Enterprise Architect Certified Master Exam Step 2

A business problem will be given to you in the form of use case diagrams, business domain model, and statement format. The requirements will encompass both Functional and Non-Functional requirements. You are requested to come up with an architecture for the given business problem to meet both the functional and non-functional requirements.

It is a very challenging experience to get to know about Java EE Architecture best practices. Once you have completed your assignment, you need to upload your assignment into Sun and it will be manually evaluated by technical authors.

Java Enterprise Edition 5 Enterprise Architect Certified Master Exam Step 3

This is another stimulating test to verify your architectural knowledge about design decisions. Architecture can be implemented in many ways with different design decisions. The questions will be on why you have chosen this way and why not the other way. You need to answer with brief explanation. If you have completed Part 1 and Part 2, Part 3 will be straightforward and very easy to crack.

The Java Enterprise Edition 5 Enterprise Architect Certified Master Exam does not require any pre-certifications from Oracle. So, if you decide to take Sun Java EE Architect certification, you can very well start without any prerequisite.

You can get sample exam question for each topic in this free course.

Singapore Gets Social for FORMULA ONE With SAP

Social Networking, Geo-Tagging and Text Analysis from SAP® BusinessObjects™ Portfolio Power Interactive Web Service for Singapore Tourism Board

SINGAPORE - September 24, 2010 -- The island nation of Singapore welcomes millions of first-time visitors each year, and the month of September will be especially busy as it plays host to the world-famous 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) has partnered with SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) to build an online service combining Twitter feeds and geo-tagging on YourSingapore.com, the STB’s online one-stop visitor information center. This will help visitors to the website discover Singapore and access relevant, real-time information on events, activities and promotions by the city and local merchants. With SAP® BusinessObjects™ Text Analysis software in the back end, the service will help improve the user experience on YourSingapore.com by processing tweets and filtering searches for special events and offers, listing these by specific street names, city districts and locations. Visitors to YourSingapore.com will get their first chance to test the Web application during the FORMULA ONE night race in Singapore, September 24–26, 2010.

The 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX will also mark the kickoff of this Web service on YourSingapore.com. In the regular tourism season, merchants around Singapore can tweet about sales, parties and events. The introduction of SAP software via YourSingapore.com will offer users an enhanced experience with intelligent text analysis that will analyze messages, group them intelligently and present them in a user-friendly way.

"Singapore will once again be filled with excitement with a concentration of sights, sounds and activities taking place around the Marina Bay area during the 3-day FORMULA ONE night race and the Grand Prix Season Singapore,” said Chang Chee Pey, director, Brand Management, STB. “This collaboration to aggregate tweets on YourSingapore.com will enhance the experience of visitors to the website and put them at the center of the online buzz in the Twitter space during this season. We invite everyone to join in the conversations at #singaporeGP.";

Newly Developed SAP Software Takes Its Second Test Drive
STB will leverage best practices gained by the SAP Research organization from a similar SAP deployment of social media tools in Australia, delivering traffic information to iPhone users. Through Twitter‘s standard application programming interface (API), a server accesses the tweets and sifts through them for city traffic information. The server also runs SAP BusinessObjects Text Analysis, which processes the tweets and filters out specific street names, city districts and affected locations. The server then converts the locations into geographic coordinates and saves them along with the corresponding message.

With more than 45 million Twitter users in the key markets of visitors identified by the STB, the need to involve Twitter in the Grand Prix outreach campaign was clear. SAP technology provides a platform that will allow the STB to supplement its tourism Twitter initiative to showcase tweets about the FORMULA ONE race and surrounding events on YourSingapore.com.

The technology allows tweets to be aggregated based on hash tags, Twitter accounts and key words, which are then displayed in an interactive and relevant manner. This allows the user to see at a glance tweets from establishments surrounding the race line in a map visual. This Twitter aggregation platform will run directly on the campaign page of YourSingapore.com.

"We are constantly looking for innovative ways to help our customers implement SAP technology; in this case, enabling Singapore visitors with useful information through familiar user access” said Krish Datta, president, SAP Southeast Asia. “This application started as a spontaneous idea, but it quickly morphed into a means to demonstrate the potential of SAP software, and is a great showcase of the flexibility of our solutions. We are excited about partnering with Singapore Tourism Board and look forward to seeing the campaign results."

E-learning: University of Texas Home to Library without Books

September 23, 2010 -- The difference between the University of Texas at San Antonio's Applied Engineering and Technology Library and other science-focused libraries is not that its on-site collection is also available electronically. It is that its on-site collection is only available electronically.
The idea of a libraries with no bound books has been a recurring theme in conversations about the future of academe for a long time, and it has become common practice for academic libraries to store rarely used volumes in off-campus facilities. But there are few, if any, examples of libraries that actually have zero bound books in them.

UNTESTED: Can college students learn as well on iPads, e-books?
Some libraries, such as the main one at the University of California at Merced, and the engineering library at Stanford University, have drastically reduced the number of print volumes they keep in the actual library building, choosing to focus on beefing up their electronic resources. In fact, some overenthusiastic headline writers at one point dubbed Stanford's library "bookless." But that is "a vision statement, not a point of fact," says Andrew Herkovic, the director of communications for Stanford's libraries.

San Antonio says it now has the first actual bookless library. Students who stretch out in the library's ample study spaces — which dominate the floor plan of the new building — and log on to the its resource network using their laptops or the library's 10 public computers will be able to access 425,000 e-books and 18,000 electronic journal articles. Librarians will have offices there and will be available for consultations.

ON THE WEB: Is a campus library valuable?
INSIDE HIGHER ED: The joy of stacks
Students used to get their engineering and technology books from a collection at the campus's main library. That collection is still there, and books from it are available upon request. But at the new library dedicated to that specialty, the only dead trees are in the beams and furniture.

The fact that San Antonio has actually built a literal version of what many in the industry hold up as symbol of the inevitability of electronic as the prevailing medium in academe may be commendable, but it is not "earth-moving," says Roger Schonfeld, the managing director of Ithaka S+R, a nonprofit that promotes innovation in libraries and elsewhere. Many libraries, especially science and engineering ones, have started moving their print volumes out of the building and into remote storage.

Lisa Hinchliffe, president of the Association of College and Research Libraries and head of the undergraduate library at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, says that her institution, along with several others, has embedded librarians in various department buildings. Their offices in those building, it could be argued, constitute bookless libraries inasmuch as they are places where students and professors go to learn about how to use campus collections that can be accessed from anywhere.

More interesting than the fact that San Antonio's newest library has no printed books in it is the fact that more and more libraries are devoting less space to printed books, and are thus reimagining the physical space of the library, Hinchliffe says. Whether the building houses half of its former print collection or none of it, the evolution of the library as a physical hub is something nearly every library is dealing with.

As a shared space for discovery, socializing, and studying, the library is still very much relevant and in demand, says Krisellen Maloney, dean of libraries at San Antonio. That is why the university invested $82.5 million in a new library building instead of just putting librarians in offices around campus, Maloney says. "You study and work in the library," she says. "That's how libraries have always been. When people come to the library with books, they're not necessarily using the books. They're also there for the services — to consult, get instruction, find content, and use the content."

"Our fiscal year 2010 top line result was less than what we expected at the start of the year," said Ashu Roy, eGain CEO. "This was primarily due to our hybrid business model driven by our deployment flexibility. Our clients value our proven deployment flexibility across cloud and on-premise, so we are happy to provide it. Specifically, last quarter a very significant license transaction, over $5 million dollars, slipped. The good news is the deal closed in August, 2010. So we are off to an excellent start for fiscal year 2011.
Top-line disappointment notwithstanding, I am delighted with our team's strong execution for the year. In fiscal year 2010 we saw a healthy growth in our recurring services revenue and generated $2.5 million of operating cash even while we invested in smart customer-centric initiatives in a tough economy.

"We consolidated our product leadership with sustained research and development investment. In 2009, we were again rated a leader by Gartner in the "Magic Quadrant for E-Service Suites". And in 2010, just hot off the press, we further improved our standing as a leader in the 2010 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Web Customer Service (renamed from E-Service). Our team is justifiably proud of this 'threepeat' accomplishment—they have earned it."

Business Highlights
New hosting and license bookings¹
New hosting and license bookings for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2010 were $2.8 million, a decrease of 38% from the comparable year-ago quarter. New hosting and license bookings for the fiscal year 2010 were $13.1 million, a decrease of 14% from the prior year. Of the total new hosting and license bookings in the fiscal year 2010, 42% were from new hosting bookings and 58% were from new license bookings, compared to 29% from new hosting bookings and 71% from new license bookings in the prior year.

New milestones, products, and industry recognition
eGain was positioned in the Leaders Quadrant by Gartner, Inc. in the "Magic Quadrant for E-Service Suites 2009" report. In the 2010 Gartner report (renamed "Magic Quadrant for Web Customer Service") released in September 2010, eGain further improved its position in the Leaders Quadrant.

eGain released eGain Service™ 9 suite, the company's most advanced Customer Interaction Hub solution with rich functional enhancement and significant platform improvement.

Partnerships
We have had an active and growing partner program in EMEA for some time. In fiscal year 2010, we expanded our efforts in developing North America partners. We believe the eGain proposition is compelling for value-added resellers (VARs) who have traditionally sold contact center technologies to enterprises. In fiscal year 2010 we signed agreements with 9 new partners.

We extended our multi-year relationship with Cisco Systems, Inc. to be their OEM supplier for email management and web collaboration products as part of the Cisco Contact Center Suite. Our partnership with Cisco continues to grow. We gain from Cisco's global market reach. Conversely, Cisco benefits from our agile innovation and proven product leadership.

Customer momentumeGain continued to build new relationships with a wide range of enterprise customers in fiscal year 2010. Notable new customer relationships include:

One of the nation's largest energy companies
One of the nations largest health insurers
A world-leading mobile telecommunications company
One of the world's leading providers of fully integrated mobile communication services
A leading global provider of comprehensive testing and assessment services
A leading global beauty company
A premier online luxury fashion retailer
One of the UK's largest customer management outsourcing companies

Market and Business Outlook
We are optimistic about our prospects for fiscal year 2011. Beyond the obvious running start—the one we got from the large deal that slipped from last quarter—we see growing market interest in our recently launched products. In response, we are increasing our investment in direct sales and partner development.

For fiscal year 2011 we currently expect an increase in new total revenue of 20% when compared to fiscal year 2010. In addition, we currently expect to generate positive cash flows from operations in fiscal year 2011, while planning to invest a significant portion of our anticipated top-line growth back into growing our distribution capability.

¹We define New Hosting and License Bookings as new contractual commitments (excluding renewals) received by the company for the purchase of product licenses and hosting services. Such contracts are not cancelable for convenience but may be subject to termination by our customers for cause or breach of contract by us. Furthermore, because we offer a hybrid delivery model, the mix of new license and hosting business in a quarter could also have an impact on our revenue in a particular quarter. Due to effects that these trends have on our short-term revenue and profitability, we believe that it is useful to disclose New Hosting and License Bookings detail in this and future financial releases. We use this metric internally to focus management on the productivity of the sales team and period-to-period changes in our core business. Therefore, we believe that this information is meaningful and helpful in allowing individuals to better assess the ongoing nature of our core operations.

Apple Could Alleviate iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor issues with iOS Change

One of the major issues surrounding the iPhone 4 release this summer was the proximity sensor failing during phone calls, resulting in muting, conference calling, and other inadvertent touch input. September 22, 2010 -- One of the major issues surrounding the iPhone 4 release this summer was the proximity sensor failing during phone calls, resulting in muting, conference calling, and other inadvertent touch input. Despite the promise of relief in the iOS 4.1 update, many users, including myself, are still having proximity sensor issues.

A forum thread on the Apple Support Discussions addresses a functionality of the sleep/wake button (the one on the top of the iPhone) that could help users experiencing proximity sensor problems if Apple would adjust the code in iOS slightly.

Currently, the sleep/wake button, when pressed during a phone call while using the handset, is the hardware method for hanging up the call. If, however, you are on speaker phone, or have your headphones plugged in, the sleep/wake button locks the screen, allowing you to handle the device without having to worry about inadvertent screen touches.
I think you see where I am going with this.

Should Apple adjust the functionality of the sleep/wake button during normal handset calling to lock the screen? I think it would certainly help users who continue to experience proximity sensor issues. Since I happen to be one of those users, I did an informal survey of some iPhone owners I know to see how many of them use the sleep/wake button to hang up calls.
As I suspected, the most common answer was, "It does that?"
I'm not one to generally question Apple's user interface decisions, but this particular one seems suspect. I understand Apple not wanting to change the functionality to cover an issue that they claim is fixed, but it seems more logical to have that button lock the screen anyway.

As one of my surveyed friends asked, "what if I wanted to transmit a shady drug deal I haphazardly got involved in through a series of coincidental events?" He couldn't. The proximity sensor could fail in his pocket, turn on speaker phone, and the cops listening on the other end would be exposed. And I'd have one less friend.

Personally, being able to lock the screen during a normal handset call would mean I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally hanging up on any of my consulting clients or activating mute while I am trying to catch my mom up on my latest projects.

So, to review, there are two major issues at hand:
  1. The proximity sensor issue on iPhone 4 is still not fixed. If the issue is hardware-related, Apple should be replacing phones with the problem, assuming they've done all they can from a software perspective to alleviate the problems.
  2. If Apple is sure the problem is software-related, the sleep/wake button functionality during handset calling should be adjusted to provide relief for users that have the proximity sensor issue until a suitable, permanent solution is found via an iOS update.
